What Are Terpenes?
Terpenes are aromatic compounds produced by the hemp plant — and by thousands of other plants, fruits, and herbs — that contribute to the characteristic smell and flavor of hemp extract. They are not cannabinoids, but they occur naturally alongside cannabinoids in the hemp plant's resin glands (trichomes) and survive into hemp extract depending on the extraction method and refinement level.
For B2B buyers, terpenes matter for several reasons: they affect product sensory characteristics, they influence what documentation belongs on your COA, they interact with cannabinoids in ways that affect formulation behavior, and some are subject to quality and safety considerations that warrant understanding.
Where Do Terpenes Come From in Hemp Extract?
Terpenes in hemp extract can be:
Naturally retained from the source plant. Low-temperature extractions — particularly CO2 extraction at sub-critical conditions and some ethanol extraction methods — preserve terpenes that are present in the hemp flower at harvest. These are called "native" or "plant-derived" terpenes.
Added back after distillation. Standard hemp distillation drives off terpenes along with solvent and other volatiles. Some extract producers re-introduce terpenes — either from the same strain of hemp (a "strain-specific" terpene profile) or from other plant sources like citrus, lavender, or pine — after distillation. These are called "added" or "botanical" terpenes.
Absent. Highly refined distillate and CBD isolate typically contain very low or undetectable terpene levels. For applications where terpene contribution to flavor or odor is undesirable, isolate or highly refined distillate is the appropriate extract choice.
The distinction between naturally retained and added terpenes matters for labeling and product claims. Products that claim to have a "native" or "strain-specific" terpene profile should be verified through COA data rather than accepted on supplier description alone.
Common Hemp Terpenes and What They Contribute
The major terpenes found in hemp extract include:
Myrcene
One of the most abundant terpenes in hemp. Has an earthy, musky, slightly fruity aroma. Myrcene is also found in mangoes, hops, and thyme. In hemp extracts, high myrcene content is associated with more pungent, "dank" aroma profiles. For formulators developing products where a neutral sensory profile is important, myrcene-heavy extracts may require additional masking or should be replaced with isolate.
Beta-Caryophyllene
A sesquiterpene with a spicy, woody, black pepper aroma. Beta-caryophyllene is unique among terpenes because it has been shown to interact with CB2 receptors — the same receptors that cannabinoids bind to. This has generated significant research interest and has led some brands to specifically call out beta-caryophyllene content in their product messaging. From a regulatory standpoint, beta-caryophyllene is GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) as a food additive.
Linalool
Floral and slightly spicy, most famously associated with lavender. Hemp extracts with higher linalool content have a more pleasant, accessible sensory profile than myrcene-dominant extracts and may be preferred for products targeting general wellness or sleep applications.
Limonene
A citrus terpene found in the rinds of lemons, oranges, and other citrus fruit as well as some hemp varieties. Limonene in hemp extract contributes a fresh, citrusy note that many formulators find useful for masking hemp’s earthier flavor characteristics.
Pinene (α-Pinene and β-Pinene)
Pine-scented terpenes common in conifer trees and some hemp varieties. Pinene-rich extracts have a clean, forest-like aroma.
Humulene
Also found in hops (which gives beer its characteristic bitterness). Earthy and slightly bitter aroma. Humulene-rich hemp extracts can have flavor profiles that pair well with botanical beverage applications.
Terpenes and the Entourage Effect: What Buyers Should Know
The "entourage effect" is the hypothesis that cannabinoids and terpenes in hemp extract work together synergistically — that full-spectrum extract with a complete complement of plant compounds produces different effects than isolated cannabinoids alone. This concept appears frequently in consumer marketing.
From a B2B ingredient buyer perspective, what matters is:
- The entourage effect is not established as a regulatory claim. FTC guidance on substantiation for hemp health and efficacy claims applies to entourage effect claims. Buyers who plan to use this language in product marketing should consult with legal counsel.
- Terpene presence in an extract does not automatically indicate a "full-spectrum" profile. Full-spectrum is a product description that implies retention of the full cannabinoid and terpene profile of the source plant. Distillate with added botanical terpenes is not the same thing, and the distinction matters for accuracy in labeling.
- Terpene content should be on your COA. If you are buying an extract represented as having a specific terpene profile — strain-specific, native terpenes, or any defined terpene complement — that profile should be documented in the Certificate of Analysis from your supplier. Terpene panels are routinely available from ISO 17025-accredited hemp testing laboratories.
Terpenes and Regulatory Considerations
Terpenes are generally recognized as safe (GRAS) as food additives when used at standard culinary concentrations in food products. However:
- Concentration matters. Some terpenes that are safe at typical food additive concentrations can cause respiratory irritation or other issues at high concentrations. In concentrated hemp extracts, terpene levels can be higher than in food applications, and formulators should be aware of safe use concentration limits.
- Terpene source matters for labeling. If your product contains added botanical terpenes — particularly terpenes derived from cannabis varieties rather than other plant sources — labeling implications vary by state and product category.
- Terpenes do not count toward THC compliance. Terpenes are separate from cannabinoids and do not factor into total THC calculations. A high-terpene extract can still be fully compliant under the 0.3% total THC dry weight standard.
What to Ask Your Supplier About Terpenes
- Does your extract contain terpenes? Are they naturally retained or added?
- If added: what is the terpene source, and are they from hemp or other botanical sources?
- Is a terpene panel included on the COA for this extract?
- What is the total terpene percentage or major terpene concentrations?
- Has the terpene profile been validated against a reference standard from the same cultivar?
If terpenes are relevant to your product's sensory profile or marketing claims, these questions belong in your supplier qualification process.
When Terpenes Don’t Matter
For applications where sensory neutrality is the priority — capsules, tablets, unflavored topicals, or any product where hemp flavor and aroma must be completely masked — high-refinement isolate or terpene-free distillate is typically the better ingredient choice. Terpene management is a formulation variable, not a compliance requirement, and for many applications the right answer is simply to select an ingredient format that doesn't introduce the variable at all.
